What are Fissure Sealants?
Fissure sealants are made from a specialised resin which covers deep grooves of mainly back teeth; this will help prevent food from getting into these grooves which are often hard to clean.

What is the Procedure for Fissure Sealants?
An advantage of fissure sealants is that the process to apply them is non-invasive and doesn’t require any local anaesthetic. Your teeth will be cleaned before being lightly etched. The sealant is carefully painted onto the prepared tooth surfaces. It soon hardens, or we may accelerate this process with a special light. Afterwards you will be able to eat and drink straightaway.
Your fissure sealants should last for many years. Regular check-ups help us determine whether they need to be reapplied due to wear.
What are the Benefits of Fissure Sealants?
Fissure sealants are used to protect the deep grooves of teeth, helping to prevent cavities from developing. These are generally applied on the molars with deep grooves and occasionally, some front teeth. We recommend that children have fissure sealants applied as soon as their adult teeth have emerged as this is a great preventative treatment. Sometimes we will suggest children with particularly deep grooves in their milk teeth have fissure sealants to protect these teeth and keep them strong and healthy until their adult teeth are ready to emerge. They are also useful for adults with healthy back teeth without any fillings and who would like to protect them.
