Why are X-Rays Necessary?

Our dentists use x-rays to diagnose dental problems including dental decay and gum disease, and to assess impacted wisdom teeth and root canal therapy. We take sets of x-rays at regular intervals, typically every two years for adults in reasonable dental health while younger patients whose teeth and jaws are still developing, or those with on-going dental problems may need more frequent x-rays. We only use digital x-rays because it typically reduces radiation exposure by 75%.

Are X-Rays Safe?

We use digital x-rays which only emit very low levels of radiation, far below the amount we are all exposed to annually from background sources. Every precaution is taken whenever x-rays are required as we adhere to the strictest safety protocols and will only take these images when necessary.

Which Types of X-rays Can Be Taken at One Smile?

We have invested extensively in the latest imaging technologies to ensure our patients receive the very best level of care. Our surgeries can take conventional digital dental x-rays which are commonly used to diagnose tooth infections and tooth decay.

One Smile is also equipped to take OPG (Orthopantomogram) dental x-rays. An OPG is important for the assessment of the jaw, and this includes generalised gum disease, cysts and other lesions including cancer. It is also used as a part of our assessment for orthodontics and impacted wisdom teeth.

What is a Cone Beam CT Scanner?

Our Cone Beam CT (computed tomography) scanner provides an image of your jaws and is often used for advanced assessment of wisdom teeth, planning of implant and other surgical procedures. It gives us accurate views of the structures and provides us with a cross-sectional 3D view of your teeth and jaw, showing detailed information about the condition of your jawbone.
