What is Digital Smile Design?

Increasingly, people are using restorative and cosmetic dentistry to improve the appearance of their teeth. However, there is a wide choice of treatments available and which provide different aesthetic outcomes. Previously, patients had to rely on their dentist’s vision and artistic ability to bring their dreams and desires to life. Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a sophisticated process allowing patients to actually see how their teeth could look before treatment begins, using detailed 3-D digital images. One Smile offers this service because we find it provides a far more predictable outcome, giving better and more satisfying results.

How Does DSD Work?

Our dentist will thoroughly analyse your teeth and facial features before taking images using a state-of-the-art intraoral scanning device. The 3-D scanner creates an incredibly accurate image of your teeth, and the process is comfortable, quick and non-invasive. We also take photographs and videos and can create mock-ups of your new smile using models of your mouth. Videos are particularly useful because they show how your facial features move and allow us to gain a more accurate view of the relationship between your teeth and lips.

Next, this diagnostic information is used to create a digital design. This design is carefully customised to ensure a harmonious relationship between your teeth and lips and to make sure the shape, colour and size of your teeth will complement your facial features.

What Are the Advantages of This Technology?

Because the design is digital, we can show you these images, so you become fully involved with the process of designing your new smile. We find that when patients can see these images, they are more able to communicate their vision for their smile to our dental team. Together, we can work with you to manipulate these 3-D digital images, improving them until you are entirely happy with their appearance.

If mock-ups are used, it may even be possible to place specific restorations temporarily in your mouth, giving you an even better idea as to how your smile will look and feel once treatment is completed. Usually, people find this an exciting process that helps them to decide which treatments will be most effective. Often, these mock-ups are used when temporary teeth are required, and after the treatment process has begun.
