A sinus lift or graft is a specialised bone graft procedure to help restore bone in your jaw around your sinuses, towards the back of your upper jaw. It is often used prior to dental implant surgery to replace the upper back teeth, but if you only require a very small sinus graft then it might be possible to place the graft at the same time as the dental implant.
How Will I Know If I Need a Sinus Lift?
Sinus lifts are commonly required when a patient is missing one or more upper back teeth, near the sinus cavities. The jawbone tends to be thinner in this area and is often inadequate to support a dental implant. The planning procedure for implant dentistry is very thorough and you will have a CT scan and digital dental x-rays which show the quantity and quality of bone available in this area. If these CT scans and digital dental x-rays have found insufficient bone in this area, your dentist will recommend a sinus lift prior to dental implant surgery.
What is the Procedure for a Sinus Lift?
Your dentist will expose your jawbone and will carefully cut into it. There is a membrane in between the jawbone and the sinus cavity, and this is ‘lifted’ out of the way so the area can be filled with your bone graft. Your gums are then stitched over the jawbone so the graft can heal and integrate with your own natural bone.
