Inlays and onlays are used to repair larger areas of decay in back teeth, where placing a conventional filling would not be strong enough to completely restore the tooth to full strength. The chewing surfaces of back teeth can often develop cavities due to the intricate grooves and fissures that are tricky to brush clean. Inlays and onlays are very hardwearing and will be nearly invisible once cemented into the tooth.
What is the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?
Both are very similar. An inlay is used to repair a cavity in the central part of the chewing surface of a back tooth, but an onlay is slightly larger. An onlay can fill any cavities in the centre of a back tooth as well as replace one or more of the cusps. A tooth’s cusps are the raised points you can see on the inner and outer edges of back teeth, and these can break, chip off or may decay.
What are Inlays and Onlays Made From?
These restorations are made from hardwearing porcelain. One Smile has a CEREC machine that can mill inlays and onlays while you wait. A temporary filling will not be necessary as you will be able to leave our clinic with your new porcelain filling in place.
