Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in the late teens or early twenties. By this time, there is often too little space in the jaw to comfortably accommodate them. As a result they may try to emerge underneath other teeth, will only partially erupt or will try to come out sideways through the gums. When this occurs then they will need to be removed.
What is the Procedure for Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Wisdom tooth removal is often straightforward and can often be carried out in our dental surgery. If your case is particularly complex then we may refer you to an oral surgeon. Complications are rare, although a tiny percentage of people will experience a condition called ‘dry socket’, where the blood clot protecting the empty socket is dislodged, delaying the healing process.
How Can I Tell If My Wisdom Teeth Need Extracting?
Our dentists will keep a close eye on the development of your wisdom teeth. Digital dental x-rays will be taken periodically to assess your overall dental health and these will show the exact position of these teeth. If it is obvious they cannot erupt normally then we will recommend their extraction.
