Why Consider Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure to restore bone in your jaw. Bone can be lost due to gum disease, tooth loss or trauma. This procedure is often used to prepare an area for dental implants, restoring height or width, or both to the jawbone. It is necessary for the bone to be as close as possible to its original dimensions so the implant can be placed in the best position for optimal results. Where Does The Bone Graft Come From?

There are various different types of bone grafting materials that may be used. It is possible for bone to be taken from another site in your body such as your chin or hip, but often a synthetic bone is used. These types of artificial bone grafts may contain special proteins that prompt your body to begin producing new bone cells, gradually replacing the artificial material with your own bone. It will take several months for a bone graft to fully heal and integrate with your own bone.

Will My Bone Graft Be Successful?

This type of oral surgery has a very high success rate and is planned very carefully. However, there is always a small element of risk with any kind of surgical procedure. Some people, particularly those who smoke or who have certain diseases are more at risk of bone graft failure. If a graft does fail, it can be removed and a new graft placed once the area has fully healed. Your dentist will carefully discuss this treatment with you beforehand to make sure it is the best choice for you.
