What is All-on-4?

Despite advances in preventative dentistry many people will still lose most or all their teeth. Nowadays, dental implants are increasingly considered the treatment of choice when restoring a full upper or lower arch of teeth. Dental implants provide far greater stability compared with conventional dentures, so it is easier to speak and eat. All-on-4 is a sophisticated treatment that can restore an entire arch of teeth, and which only requires four dental implants, significantly fewer than usual.

What are the Advantages of All-on-4?

Usually, when it’s necessary to restore an entire arch of teeth, at least six or more dental implants are needed. These implants are situated evenly throughout the arch to support the full arch bridge of teeth. While this treatment is effective, it does tend to be quite expensive because of the number of implants required. Also, bone grafting is often necessary to build up the jawbone in areas where it isn’t quite strong enough to support a dental implant. Bone grafting increases the cost and often the time required to complete implant treatment. All-on-4 offers patients an excellent and highly affordable solution for complete tooth loss.

How Does Treatment Work?

Whereas usually the dental implants are situated at regular intervals along the jawbone, the implants used for All-on-4 are situated towards the front of the mouth. This is because the bone at the front of the mouth is naturally thicker and stronger so usually any bone grafting is unnecessary.

Two dental implants are located vertically right at the front of the mouth while the other two are positioned either side slightly further back. To avoid invasive bone grafting and damage to critical anatomical structures, the posterior implants are tilted up to 45°.

How Soon Can I Receive My New Teeth?

Often, it’s possible to receive your new teeth quite soon after your implants are placed. A temporary restoration can be made before the implants fitted, so you needn’t worry about being without your smile. Your new teeth will be fitted onto the implants and are used while the implants heal and fuse with your jawbone. Once healing is completed, a process that can take three months or more, we can make and fit your permanent teeth.
